With its 19 member states, population of 430 million (2008) and an annual import bill of around US$ 152 billion (2008) and an export bill of over US$ 157 billion (2008), COMESA forms a major market place for both internal and external trading. COMESA APPOINTS NEW ACTING ACTESA CEO
COMESA Secretary General Mr Sindiso Ngwenya has appointed Dr Chungu Mwila as the new Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Alliance for Alliance for Commodity Trade in Eastern and Southern Africa (ACTESA). ACTESA is a Specialized Agency of COMESA.

COMESA TO OBSERVE 2011 ZAMBIAN GENERAL ELECTIONS

At the invitation of the Government of the Republic of Zambia, COMESA will deploy an Electoral Observer Mission to the Presidential, Parliamentary and Local Government elections of the Republic of Zambia, scheduled to be held on the 20th September 2011.

COMESA COMMIITTEE ON CUSTOMS UNION REVEALS PROGRESS
The third meeting of the Committee on the COMESA Customs Union met in Lusaka from 3rd to 5th August to reveal progress made towards having a fully implemented Customs Union by June 2012.

LET US HELP WOMEN IN SOUTH SUDAN - COMESA
The Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa has implored women, Civil Society Organizations and the private sector in the COMESA region to support fellow women of Southern Sudan with skills development programmes in areas such as entrepreneurship, conflict resolution, management and conflict prevention as well as peace building.

The COMESA-EAC-SADC Tripartite

A highly successful Second Tripartite Summit took place on 12 June 2011, in Sandton in South Africa. Attended by 12 Heads of State and 13 Plenipotentiaries, the Summit formally launched the negotiations for a COMESA-EAC-SADC Tripartite Free Trade Area.
